AGM NEWS
Barrie Moody took over from Dave at the AGM on Monday 19th March.
We continued the theme of a drive-out and drive-in, this time with a deep covering of snow on the course. The combined yardage was 306 with Nick Goslett and Simon Barnes seen here having the nearest guesses. We raised £147 for Barrie’s charity.

ST PATRICK’S DAY 2018

Not ostensibly a Vets event, but reported in these pages and attended by many Vets.
Thanks to Roger R-B for pointing out that this year’s event will be run by the club. It is timely therefore to pass on a big thank you to TOM O’Donavan and JULIAN Woolfe for all the hard work they have put into making the St Patrick’s event part of the club’s heritage.
Roger would like to personally thank Tom and Julian for the the 39 years he has been been attending the event, for their welcome to the club so many years ago and never ending good cheer. We are sure all Vets would like to join him in offering Tom and Julian the most sincere thanks.
If you wish to participate this year the entry sheet is in the downstairs lobby.

WINTER ECLECTIC LATEST SCORES as at 20th January
CAPTAIN’S DAY
Started with a bang (once Captain Dave had managed to light his £27 starter rocket in the gale force wins). We managed to dodge the rain and welcomed refreshments were provided by The Captain with his beautiful assistant Neil Palmer in close attendance.
The 3 ball Texas Scramble competition was won by Barry Green and Ray Bullock using the Barber/Dennett shot and handicap adjustment. In second place were Brian Spears, Barry Thomas and Brian Lock (shown below looking a bit fuzzy – perhaps it was the refreshments!). Third were Bernard Yates, Richard Dyson and Terry Hinde.

Nearest the Pin prizes for his team on the 8th were won by Derek Chivers and, after some dubious tactics, furthest from the pin on the 14th by John Boucher.
Vice Captain Barrie Moody was presented with an award for – not taking particularly good care of himself on the golf course (and elsewhere)!

GRAHAM JENKINS’ CELEBRATION LUNCH AND COMPETITION
Thanks to the organisation of Tom O’Donovan a great day was had by all who attended Graham’s celebration lunch (including two past Vets, Maurice Huggett (Past Captain) and Sam Amadass).
Gifts were presented to Graham (some of his favourite rum and a painting of the 5th green by Niall McCabe). A bouquet was also given to Yvonne for all the support she has given to Graham in his role.
Richard Dyson read out (a not very religious) ‘homily’ charting Graham’s life and his time with the Vets.
Two 9 hole competitions were played out (front nine and back nine) after the fog had cleared. The respective winners were Richard Dyson (23pts) and Ray Dennett (22pts).

Latest news on Simon Brown (12 Dec)
SIMON played well in the final Seniors event of the year T8 at Belle
Mare Plage, Mauritius. He is 14 in the money list this year and retains his
card. Only the top 20 do as most of the slots are reserved for those turning 50
on the European Tour. It means he qualifies for the Senior Open next year at
Royal Porthcawl. Be there or be square.
Highly recommended course for viewing and playing. It is as good as any Links
Course in the country. It is to be used for The Open Championship in the future.
There a many tees from which you cannot see bunkers but most you can see the
fairways!
He has been in a position to win 3 times this year, nearest was leaving a 12
footer 6 inches Short to force a playoff. Thanks to all of you who have been interested and following Simon.
EVER WONDERED IF IT WILL BE FOGGY UP AT THE DYKE TODAY?

Bunny’s Yew – Summerdown, Dyke Golf Club
Have you ever sheltered under the Yew tree by the 9th hole? Have you ever given it a second thought? Well Roger Robinson-Brown has and reported it to the Tree Register of the British Isles. Their director David Alderman certainly thinks it is worthy of note and possibly older than Roger’s estimate of 300 years!
“Thank you for the details of this yew. It sounds like an important landmark tree in this area. Other yew trees growing in harsh conditions on limestone cliffs have, from dendrochronology, turned out to be much older than any other data would suggest. So its age will be difficult to determine from girth alone”
Sited on Dyke Golf Club, Brighton. On the spine of the South Downs 190 Meters above sea level.Latitude 50 52.75N 000 12.18W. The Yew is 470 yards East South East of The Clubhouse.

The Tree itself is Sturdy and has been “topped” by perhaps the 1987 Hurricane (150mph) or Lightning. It is shaped by the prevailing wind leading edge towards the South West. Its growth perhaps stunted by air temperature of 2 degrees below Air Temp at sea level during the prevailing wind. (Dry Adiabatic Lapse Rate). It seems to have seeded naturally. Growth of grass on the Golf Course is retarded by about 1 month to six weeks in the spring. It is on Chalk with little topsoil. There is a suggestion of a neolithic site about 800 yards away but this has been landscaped. Girth Measured at 5 feet is 12 feet 3 inches and by observation height is 42 feet 9 inches. So from your excellent chart it would seem to be around 300 years old.
