DYKE GOLF CLUB VETERANS
Founded 1965
MINUTES OF THE 58th* ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE DYKE VETERANS
Held at The Dyke Golf Club on Monday 21 March 2022, commencing at 12.15.
1. Apologies for absence: R. Dyson, D. Chivers, P Korman, J Heard, R Potter, M Davies, R Box, M Grimes, E. Williams. D Johnson was taken ill before the meeting commenced.
2. Minutes of last AGM.
* NOTE: The 2020 AGM was abandoned due to a COVID 19 Lockdown and Peter Faulkner agreed to continue as Captain until after lockdown. Tony Woolley was elected Vice-Captain in 2019 and so a hand-over of captaincy was agreed and took place in late 2020. Again due to COVID there was not an AGM in 2021. There are therefore no minutes for what would have been the 56th and 57th AGMs – T Bishop proposed they be taken as read, seconded by T Woolley and approved.
3. Matters arising – None
4. Match Secretary’s Report, read in his absence.
The vets section has received a tremendous response for volunteers for the home and away matches . We have 32 matches in total this year.
It would be helpful if you have signed up for a match and find that you are unable to play, that you remove your name promptly to assist the match manager in finding a replacement as necessary.
Thank everybody for their support. D Chivers
5. COMPETITION SECRETARY’S REPORT – R Sayer
Emerging from the restrictions we had another very enjoyable year of competitions which were extremely well supported.
My job has been made infinitely simpler by the fact that we are now able to run all our competitions, both Strokeplay and Knockout, through the club computer system, and I am hugely grateful to Martin Yeats for setting this all up. Of course if any of the membership still have difficulties accessing the relevant information I am only too happy to assist them.
In August we introduced a new competition to honour our long-serving ex-secretary Graham Jenkins. This consisted of the Presidents Salver which was one by Paul McClafferty and the top 12 finishers in that competition competed a week later for the Graham Jenkins Jug, very suitably won by our present hard working secretary, Ray Dennett.
A number of issues arose during the year regarding how we run our competitions.
The committee made a decision to divide the strokeplay competitions into two divisions. This was implemented for the first time last week in the Lynde Cup and the dividing point of the two divisions we proposed worked perfectly with almost equal numbers of entrants in the two divisions. The trophy will go to the best overall score regardless of division and the prize money divided equally.
Last year we trialled the idea of allowing members to play off the blue tees or the yellow tees in
our strokeplay competitions. This was not universally popular as the computer programme was unable to simply reduce the number of shots allocated to those playing off the shorter tees. This led to confusion for the vast majority of the entrants and artificially inflated scores. The committee agreed to put to a vote of the membership whether to continue with this experiment and we will ask them to vote on the following proposal: That all Vets strokeplay and knockout competitions will be played from one tee, namely the yellow tees when they are available and the Black tees when they are not.
Bob Russell made a very eloquent speech in support of continuing with 2 tees. There ensued a debate exploring the pros and cons. The vote was taken and carried virtually unanimously in favour of the committee’s proposal.
As a final note may I bring up the question of Submission of cards for handicap purposes. The WHS is premised on the principle of submitting regular cards and as your handicap index reflects your last 20 cards it would seem that submitting a minimum of 20 cards a year would mean that your handicap index was a reasonable reflection of your current expertise. I know that some members feel that submitting Casual Round cards is a pain, particularly with having to putt out.
A good suggestion would be in the roll-ups and in your regular 4-ball groupings you have at least one day per month when you agree to all submit a card and organize a little competition amongst yourself accordingly. Doing this and playing in the qualifiers would serve to keep all our handicaps up to date.
An analysis of cards submitted in the 4 months preceding the AGM and ⅔ of the membership had submitted 2 cards or less. By way of an encouragement to submit cards Nigel Packham (who had submitted 23 cards in that period) was awarded a prize of £50. There will be a similar award for the period 1 April to 30 November 2022.
6. Treasurer’s Report – read in R Dyson’ absence
First of all my apologies for missing the AGM I am on holiday but not with The Dyke Vets Funds
It has been such a long time since the last AGM and there have been lots of changes to the Accounting System
I did not appreciate the time and effort Graham Jenkins put in in his time as Treasurer Match Organiser Competition Secretary etc etc
Those positions are now filled by separate individuals
Back to the Accounts
The competition fees prizes are now dealt with by Martin and David in the Office and if you look on our web site you will see how the money has been collected and the small balance They are doing a fine job and that has relieved the Treasurer of having to balance those figures
My main job now is to receive the subs and pay out for items such as Wine on the Table sometimes and expense incurred by The Captain Match Secretary etc
The balance in that Account in March 2020 was £ 2090.40 March 2021 £ 2634.88 March 2022 £ 2697.98 I cannot deal with questions now but please feel free to email me on richarddyso@uwclub.net and I will try to answer whatever questions are raised
